Hi, my name is Peter Lew and I'm a UX and product designer currently living in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. I'm a creative at heart, who's had a passion for all things design and technology probably since around the time I got my first Nintendo (it was 8-bit).
I built my first website in high school hand coding HTML and CSS using Notepad in Windows. At the time I was way more interested in drawing pictures, so I built a portfolio site to showcase crude character designs and superhero fan art. I did it for fun, never realizing that what I was doing could be turned into a career. I wanted to know how the Internet worked and I simply began tinkering around. I had little guidance, but I had an intuition for hierarchy, alignment, and where content should go.
My design aspirations laid dormant throughout high school, but after failed dreams of becoming an NBA basketball player I went on to study Graphic Communications and minor in music at New York University.
I’ve been working in digital ever since and have 10+ years experience, primarily on the agency side with a sprinkling of startups. The coding I taught myself in high school got my foot in the door as a front-end web developer but eventually I moved into visual design, where I always intended to be. Over the years working as a visual designer, I became enamored with Flash, both animation and scripting. The death of Flash and my interest in video would lead me down yet another path, as I transitioned into motion design.
I spent 2+ years as a motion designer at Huge creating video content for the web. Many of the projects I worked on involved a lot prototyping in After Effects (long before the plethora of prototyping tools offered today), and my interest in UX began to grow. It took a while but I came to the realization that I wanted to solve more meaningful problems—I wanted to solve user problems and I wanted to create things that people interact with.
After some time off and reflection, I made the decision to enroll in General Assembly’s User Experience Design Immersive program in the summer of 2015. At GA I was able to reframe my design goals, focus on process, and learn the value of research. I was also able to break some bad design habits (i know, you are not the user) and shed some of my design ego.
I’ve been focusing on UX ever since and plan to do so, as long as robots don’t take all the jobs. The past couple months I’ve been freelancing, but before that I was UX Designer at the agency FOUR32C (recently acquired by Sullivan). I have worked on websites and mobile apps that span a variety of industries including healthcare, labor unions, and retail.
All these experiences and more make me the designer I am today. Gone are the days of wanting to design flashy splash pages to wow an audience. I strive for design that is simple, minimalist, elegant, and delightful. I’ve grown to appreciate the beauty of a well designed form, a clever empty state, or a delightful microinteraction—i could go on...
I love getting into all the details but the thing I love most about being a UX designer is the ability to wear many hats and collaborate with other team members to solve unique problems. I enjoy brainstorming, and whiteboarding high-level problems, as well as hands-on work pushing pixels in Sketch and building prototypes.
When I’m not practicing UX or reading UX articles or following UX people on Twitter, I’m usually going out to see art and live music, watching NBA basketball, or noodling around on my guitar.
